Rhode Island Government's Veto Makes a Stand Against Gambling

Both Rhode Island legislative houses passed a bill that would allow full-scale gambling at 2 slot parlors of the state but did it without the voter's participation. The deadline of overriding the veto has already passed and it cannot be declined. Donald Carcieri - the governor of Rhode Island has vetoed the ballot initiative that could expand gambling in the state.

Newport Grand is on the verge of financial collapse and Twin River parlor is almost a bankrupt, since the state applies a crushing tax on the gambling houses. The rules were changed by Carcieri's help that also established the minimum live racing hours for 2 former dog tracks. The reason of it is simple - the racing meant losing money, but a portion given to the state was much greater in comparison to greyhound losses. Gambling industry of Rhode Island faced the menace of collapse.

Carcieri also has expressed his concerns about the legality of this measure. He believes the authority and legislature should control themselves and make proper decisions. The final stage of the bill will be clear in general state election as gambling expansion has to pass constitutional amendments.
